Who Are We?

History of The Welsh Academy

The Welsh Academy began in the 1990s as a dream of then-Saint Ignatius President Rev. Robert J. Welsh, S.J. ’54. He hoped to create a school for urban middle school boys who could be academically successful at a college-prep school like Saint Ignatius if given the right opportunities.

Our Mission

Inspired by the Catholic faith in the Jesuit tradition, The Welsh Academy serves the unique needs of early adolescent boys of modest economic means in their journey of becoming Men for Others. Rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, The Welsh Academy shares the mission and life of Saint Ignatius High School, forming boys to grow in faith, leadership, academic excellence, and the desire for lifelong learning.

Jesuit Identity

A Jesuit school is a Catholic school inspired by the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. For nearly 500 years, Jesuit schools around the world have formed students to become thoughtful leaders, compassionate people, and lifelong learners—committed to making a positive difference in the world.

At its core, Jesuit education is about more than academics. It's about helping students grow in mind, heart, and spirit so they can live with purpose and integrity.

“Coming to The Welsh Academy is the best decision I've ever made.”

Angel Negron-Rodriguez

Welsh Academy Class of 2025, Saint Ignatius Class of 2029

At The Welsh Academy, recent graduate Angel Negron-Rodriguez found a place where he thrived academically, socially, and spiritually. Coming from a public school background, Angel quickly adapted to the structure and rigorous curriculum at The Welsh Academy. “The best part about being here is the community,” he says. “At this school, you spend three years with the same classmates, so you really form a bond with them.”

Angel’s transition to The Welsh Academy was made easier by the encouragement he received from his teachers and family. “Teachers at my old school recommended The Welsh Academy to my parents, and they thought I’d be a good fit here,” he explains. Angel’s younger brother, Misael, is now a sixth-grade student at the Welsh Academy, as well. Reflecting on his time at The Welsh Academy, Angel adds, “It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”
